to the senate after all the criticism that she got from john mccain and lindsey graham and other key republican senators after her appearance on the sunday shows talking about the incident in benghazi. they were so angry because they say she disseminated false information about the causes of that attack. we all know the story there. we don't need to rehash it. she was given these talking points by the intelligence community. she was merely saying what they had instructed her to say. but the senators, these republican senators blamed her for using them when they say she knew they were false. she has clearance, security clearance, she had access to what had actually happened, or at least the best judgment for the classified material at that time. be that as it may, she made that trip up to capitol hill. john mccain, lindsey graham still rather forthright in their opposition, but really raised a red flag with the white house was a moderate like susan collins or bob corker expressing serious reservations. while not saying they would oppose any nomination were to it come. one of the strangest things

to it to realize this is a mistake. when i heard it, when john mccain heard it, we immediately knew it was a story that just didn't fly. maybe because we have a lot more experience than she does. >> i interviewed john mccain and lindsey graham this week who both said this. watch this. >> the fact is she not only gave wrong information, but she gave the party line that, for example, that al qaeda is decimated. al qaeda is not decimated. that our embassies and consulates are secure. they are not secure. so everybody -- we are all responsible for what we say. so we'll go through the process, if she is nominated, and we'll see. >> i think the intelligence was sanitized or created a false narrative. i've seen this movie where. >> would you object to her becoming secretary of state personally? >> personally i don't believe she would serve the country well in that capacity. >> we're willing to give her the nomination process, but she's got a lot to prove. >> i mean critics are saying, look, she's basically been stitched up here by a lot of older guys in the republican party who have looked at a bright yo

with three of the great legendary senators john mccain, joe lieberman and lindsey graham. >> it means old. >> yes, it does. i'll stand by my comments. >> america has moved incredibly fast from the time all three of you have been in the senate even. you're now seeing same-sex marriage being legalized in many states. do you think that young people don't care nearly as much about it as their parents. >> part of it is generational. part is the media. you're casting movies and tv shows where people are same-sex couples are funny, charming and kind. the point is that you can be funny, charming and kind and be in love with someone of the same sex. what's the role of the law here? we're not talking about an academic discussion. when is it proper for the government to set boundary in terms of relationships? it's clearly proper to say you can't kill someone. i have no problem with people passing on their property to someone they love. i have no problem with people having the ability to engage in a free and open life. part of this is religious. in my state, we're not going to change the traditional

. >> there are numerous republicans, john mccain, lindsey graham, a barraso who sates i would support john kerry as secretary of state who in their words would cruise through a nomination. and how would an affect if those two are in place? >> if you like what's in the last four years, you're going to get more of the same. deep defense cuts. if you had john kerry as secretary of defense. what we need is a strong secretary of defense, in spite of drawdowns and budget cuts is going to project strength. john kerry is not going to do that. he was against the gulf war, he was for the iraq war before he was against it, and he wanted to withdraw from afghanistan sooner than 2013. along those lines he's got a track record that sort of diminishes defense capability as opposed to building it up. we can't afford that. >> who would you like to see on this? >> i'm not in a position to make that kind of nomination. drastically different perspective than these two, and another piece on these they're differential to international institutions, u.n., criminal courts, that i think that diminishes american democrac

. at least lindsey graham and john mccain seem to be of one mind on this. >> going back to john mccain, though, this is a case of senatorial stalking. he was -- he had to give up the chairmanship of the armed services committee. he was term limited out in terms of the republican roles, so he went looking for another place where he could kind of do the same thing. >> he has found a corner of his own, but i think what is ironic here, mark, is that the republicans have rallied around john kerry anti-war hero who they swift boated less than ten years ago as the new secretary of state. >> the voice of reason. no, it's amazing to see how this happens. he and john mccain are best friends again. he called him mr. president the other day. what did he call him, mr. secretary. >> mr. secretary and mr. president. >> anyway, yes. >> karen, does the president lose face if he backs down on susan rice? >> he does. so i think the president's condition is going to continue to be bring it on. i do. >> bring it on, she says. thank you to my friends here for bringing it on. that is all for now. i will

right now. two key senators, republican senators john mccain of arizona and lindsey graham of south carolina. senators, thanks to both of you for coming in. let's go to both of you, senator mccain first. i know you were angry at the tone of the president's comments today, but give us your sense. are you going to vote for this legislation, assuming there's a deal? >> if there's a deal, obviously. if it does not have at least a delay in implementation of sequestration, which the secretary of defense has said will be devastating to national security, then i probably cannot vote for that, unless that's included in the deal. >> if it's a two or three-month delay, sequestration going into effect, in other words, those billions of dollars in defense cuts that are supposed to go into effect right away, if it's delayed for two or three months, is that good enough to get your vote tonight? >> i think i would have to see the rest of the package obviously, wolf. i want to support anything that would avert what's going to happen if we don't act. but at the same time, i can't vote for something t

lindsey graham and john mccain, her two fiercest critics. she then met with senator susan collin a moderate. she also came out of the meeting saying, i actually have more questions now than i did before. so if you couldn't get the moderate republican to vote for you for secretary of state, the writing was probably on the wall. >> brian: what i thought was totally out of bounds with andrea mitchell said yesterday in her evaluation and analyzing what this means in terms of politics with her backing out, she brought up the gender factor and the race factor. listen. >> i think that this had become sort of an impossible challenge for her to be confirmed. she realized that. the white house realized it as well. i think they know that they are on good political, solid ground, as you were pointing out. this is not going to heparins at all, the fact that a woman and a woman of color has been forced out of the confirmation process before she was nominated. >> gretchen: nothing to do with it. >> steve: look, it was george w bush, a republican, who placed in the job of secretary of state a wo
